imageFor the last ten years, through the endeavours of The Comitato Torino Università Estate (TUE), Turin University has widely diffused Italian language and culture. TUE has organised about twenty intensive Italian language courses, attended by approximately eight hundred international PhD students, professors, researchers, scholars and individual foreign citizens interested in improving their Italian language skills for educational and/or professional reasons.
Courses and seminars are well organised and run by qualified teachers, promoting Piedmont’s historical, cultural and artistic heritage. Italian is used outside classes to facilitate communication between participants coming from all over the world. Due to the successful undertaking, organizers have improved and increased seminars and courses, as Italian culture is increasingly considered an important aspect of the educational experience.
This year, “Italian Art and Culture” (July 1st -23rd), will celebrate its 12th anniversary. Each year this course registers approximately 60 participants interested in learning Italian for professional or academic purposes. Classes are taught at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Parallel cultural activities, including visits to museums and historical locations, workshops and seminars on art will be part and parcel of learning Italian.
The sixth edition of “Italian, Words and Music” will take place in the
autumn, from September 9th to October 1st. During this intensive Italian
language course participants learn Italian language in the context of music and MITO Settembremusica, an annual musical event that has entertained and delighted Turin and attracted artists of international renown for the last 30 years. Italian classes, workshops and visits to opera houses and concert halls will be provided. Moreover, a selection of tickets for MITO Settembremusica concerts and events will be offered to participants.
Comitato Torino Università Estate also offers a series of weekly seminars and workshops from February to June, entitled “I Venerdì della lingua italiana”, which focus on the use of Italian for special purposes. These workshops tackle specific aspects of the language not normally dealt with in traditional language courses: written language skills, Business Italian, Italian for medical sciences, etc.

Costantino LazzarettiOn the morning of June 30th, 2010 we lost our beloved Tino. He was born March 23rd, 1928 in Pottsville, PA to Italian immigrants Giuseppe and Ambrosia and at the age of three moved to the Veneto region of Italy where he lived until he was eighteen. Shortly after the war ended, he returned to the United States and resided in Seattle, WA where he met and married the love of his life, JoAnne Fabbio.
While raising a family and working full-time as a chef for some of Seattle's most renowned restaurants, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington as well as an MBA from Seattle University. This enabled him to enjoy a long and distinguished career at the Boeing Company for nearly 40 years.
He lived the "American Dream" while never losing sight of his Italian heritage, serving as a prominent figure within the Italian-American community on many advisory and fiduciary committees. He was multi-lingual, an avid reader, and a supporter of the arts, sciences, literature, history, and music…the modern day equivalent of a Renaissance man. He was an extraordinarily honest, kind, loving, generous intellectual with unwavering faith and devotion to his family. He lived a truly exemplary selfless life influencing all those who had the opportunity to know him.
